Rod Ross, one of the most respected and innovative coaches in the sport of bowling, has been named the first head coach of the United States Bowling Congress International Training Center that will be constructed at the national governing body’s new headquarters facility in Arlington, Texas.

Ross, 52, is the current head coach of Junior Team USA – the national youth amateur bowling team – and one of just 30 bowling coaches in the world certified at the USBC Gold level, the organization’s highest. He has coached numerous professional and world-renowned amateur bowlers and has helped revolutionize coaching in the sport by developing cutting-edge computer and video training technology that have become industry standards. He will use these resources at the new training center along with recently developed and patented USBC coaching technology.

“It is an extreme honor to be named the first head coach of the new USBC International Training Center,” said Ross, who is expected to begin his new position in January 2009 and will continue as Junior Team USA head coach. “I am very excited to be part of what promises to be a truly state-of-the-art facility for bowlers and coaches worldwide. The technology we will have available will lead coaching and the sport of bowling into the future. We’ll be the leader, studying bowling as a sport. It’s an exciting opportunity for advancing the sport.”

Ross, who as a Master Instructor with USBC Coaching advises coaches as well as bowlers, will direct the training center that will be located adjacent to the new USBC headquarters in Arlington. Groundbreaking for the facility is expected in late summer, with the building expected to be completed by June 2009. Plans call for the facility to have 20 bowling lanes, 14 for training and six for research and testing of bowling equipment.

Advanced technology and teaching tools will be a key component of the training center to help improve the skills of coaches and bowlers alike. The facility will be a coaching and training destination for Team USA, Junior Team USA and national teams from countries around the world. In addition, the training center will be available for a fee to any bowlers who want to take high-tech coaching lessons.

“For more than a decade, Rod has been a pioneering force in bowling coaching technology, which is a major focus of USBC as it moves forward,” said USBC Vice President – National Governing Body Neil Stremmel. “Rod’s background and expertise in coaching and technology makes him the perfect fit to make the USBC International Training Center the premier coaching and research center in the world.”

Ross and his wife, Teresa, a USBC Silver coach, have owned and operated Bowlers Connection, Inc., a pro shop and high tech training center at Manteca Bowl in Manteca, Calif., considered the premier bowling training facility in the western United States.

Ross, a native of Pocatello, Idaho, has served on the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association board of directors. He trains and advises pro shop operators around the world with his extensive knowledge of modern bowling equipment.

When Rod Ross takes over as head coach of the USBC International Training Center planned for Arlington, Texas, next year, he will have an abundance of high tech equipment at his disposal. The USBC Gold coach and his staff will use cutting edge bowling technology to train and coach bowlers from around the world.

That equipment includes USBC patented biomechanics technology systems called grip pressure, foot pressure and motion capture that use a network of cameras, electronic sensors and computers to measure exact movement of the body during the approach and delivery. Motion capture is similar to the technology that video game-makers use to record Tiger Woods hitting a golf ball or NBA star and USBC spokesperson Chris Paul shooting a jump shot to make their game characters look realistic. Ross also will oversee the use of the Computer Aided Tracking System (C.A.T.S.) to record the exact location and velocity of bowling balls on a lane.

In addition, Ross and his colleagues will use DigiTraxT ball motion tracking software that measures the accuracy, consistency and transitions of a bowling ball on a lane and BowlersMAPT software that provides coaches the ability to analyze students utilizing computers and video analysis. Ross designed and developed both DigiTraxT and BowlersMAPT.

The sophisticated technology will be put to use during coaching sessions for Team USA, Junior Team USA and national teams from Federation Internationale des Quilleurs and World Tenpin Bowling Association countries around the world who want to train in the facility. In addition, the training center will be available for a fee to any bowlers who want to take high-tech coaching lessons. Ross also will be tasked with developing new technologies to keep the training center on the cutting edge in that important area.

“The goal of the USBC International Training Center is to have the most advanced teaching tools that will provide hard data about bowlers during their approach and delivery,” said Co-Director of USBC Coaching David Garber. “As one of the most respected coaches in the bowling industry, Rod will lead the training center to be the preferred place to train athletes from around the world that, in turn, will make it a financially sound project and investment for USBC.”

Long-term goals of the training center include: advanced development of bowling coaches and coaching programs for youth bowling, high school and college bowling; developing training techniques for different bowler styles; the improvement of bowling federations around the world; and to improve the sport worldwide with an eye on securing a place for bowling in the Olympic Games.

“If we’re going to be a sport in the Olympic family, we should give our athletes the facilities they need,” said Ross, who was bowling’s nominee for the 2004 United States Olympic Committee National Coach of the Year award and the 2005 USOC “Doc” Counsilman Award for advanced use of science and technology in bowling. “We’ll be the leaders, studying bowling as a sport. It’s an exciting opportunity for advancing the sport.”

June 8, 2008

Participants from the Junior Gold Clinic held by Bowlers Connection in Manteca are panning for gold in Detroit.

The Junior Gold Clinic held in Manteca California on June 7, 2008 was a success with forty two youth bowlers in attendance. The eight hour clinic was run by Teresa Ross with lead instructors Sports Physiologist Dean Hinitz and Gold Coach Rod Ross, on lane instructors included: Mark Benavidez, Debbie, Haggerty, Leanne Barrett-Hulsenberg, Gary Hulsenberg, and assistant Gary Hafelfinger.

Twenty seven of the participants are traveling to the Junior Gold Tournament in Detroit this summer to try and win a spot on Junior Team USA 2009. The other fifteen are future Junior Gold hopefuls and a few of those will be competing in the Teen Masters tournament this year in Las Vegas.

The seminar consisted of three classroom sessions including a manual and three sessions on the lanes. The first classroom session started with Dr. Dean Hinitz motivating the students as well as how to prepare for the upcoming competition. The bowlers then went to the lanes and bowled on modified PBA patterns, Cheetah 35′, Chameleon 39′ and Shark 44′ moving every fifteen minutes so they could experience all the patterns and work with the different coaches available. The coaches shared their knowledge on the lanes to give the students insight on how to play the patterns. Three pairs of lanes remained fresh for later in the day. The bowlers also received a C.A.T.S. analysis, with a review of the report at the end of the day.

The second and third classroom session given by Rod Ross covered lane play at Junior Gold, surface adjustment for ball motion and converting spares. During the next session on the lanes with help from the coaches the bowlers were able to experiment and learn about ball reaction by changing the surface of their bowling balls using abralon pads. The final session on the lanes the bowlers worked on spare drills and different ways to convert them, also at this time the fresh pairs were put into play and the bowlers were able to put their new knowledge to the test.

With forty two bowlers bowling across the lanes during the day we were able to create a similar break- down and transition that they could possibly encounter at Junior Gold. This should have given them a better understanding on lane play and the transitions they will face. The coaches were impressed by the field and how strong it was; we believe that the bowlers are better prepared for the challenge ahead and know that California is going for Gold.

Continuing to emphasize the important role that technology will have in growing the sport of bowling, the United States Bowling Congress has developed a system that measures and displays the exact movements of a bowler’s body during the approach and delivery.

The USBC has patented this sophisticated biomechanics technology, which is called “motion capture.” The futuristic-looking system is the first of its kind in the sport of bowling and is expected to be available in the new USBC training facility where it will be used to identify and correct problems with bowlers’ techniques in a more comprehensive manner.

USBC has developed a “motion capture” system for bowling. The network of cameras, sensors and computers measure pressure points and exact movements of a bowler’s body during the approach and delivery. The new biomechanics technology is expected to be available at the USBC training facility in Arlington, Texas, to analyze bowlers’ technique. The idea is that eventually, bowling coaches — like coaches in other sports who use this type of technology to improve performance — can use motion capture in their lessons.

It is envisioned that eventually bowling coaches around the world will have access to motion capture and be able to use the system when giving lessons to their students.

Motion capture can measure body positioning and movement more precisely than standard video analysis programs. For example, motion capture can track a bowler’s body positions (such as during the back swing) to 0.001 of an inch, speed and acceleration (such as ball speed or the sliding knee moving forward) to 0.02 mph and timing (relationship between the arm swing and footsteps) to 0.001 of a second.

The system works like this: Between 40 and 70 small sensors are attached to a bowler’s clothing and six cameras positioned around the bowler on adjoining approaches and lanes pick up the red light reflected from the sensors. The bowler’s movements through the approach and delivery are tracked via the sensors and the data is transmitted to a nearby connected computer system. The bowler’s image appears on the computer screen as a moving, digital data figure that can be shown in slow motion, used with video or viewed from different angles.

“Our ‘motion capture’ system is the next step in the evolution of bowling technology and coaching,” said USBC Research Engineer Paul Ridenour. “The precise data that motion capture provides for bowling coaches will make it easier to help bowlers improve their technique.”

Motion capture is similar to the technology that video game-makers use to record Tiger Woods hitting a golf ball or NBA star and USBC spokesperson Chris Paul shooting a jump shot to make their game characters look realistic. Coaches in other sports use biomechanics technology to improve the performance of their athletes.

“In the near future, bowlers could visit the planned USBC national training center in Arlington, Texas, get hooked up to this equipment and have a coach analyze their game,” Ridenour said. “Down the road, coaches worldwide may obtain this technology and bowlers may only need to visit their local USBC coach for a high tech lesson.”

The world’s top bowling coaches saw a sneak preview of the motion capture system at USBC Headquarters in suburban Milwaukee during a coach training event this past February. Among those in attendance was world-renowned Australian two-handed bowler Jason Belmonte, who tested the new system under the guidance of USBC engineers.

“Bowling, like all other sports, needs to keep moving forward with coaching techniques,” said Belmonte, a USBC Silver coach and USBC Youth spokesperson. “This will be the future of coaching. The more accurate look a coach can get of a player’s game, the better information that player will receive and the more likely the player will improve and enjoy tenpin bowling for a longer time.”

Mexico’s Daniel Falconi tests out the USBC motion capture system during an international coaching training seminar at USBC Headquarters in Greendale, Wis., this past February.

In addition to the motion capture system, USBC recently secured patents for two other biomechanics systems that it developed for use in coaching the sport. USBC research engineers created advanced technology that measures grip and foot pressure by transmitting body movement data to a computer via a series of pressure sensors connected to a bowler’s throwing hand and feet.

Pikeville senior Kayla Bandy and Saginaw Valley State junior Dan MacLelland were named Most Valuable Players for the 2007-08 collegiate bowling season by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA).

Bandy and MacLelland were honored along with the rest of the All-Americans at the “Night of Champions” banquet held Wednesday in conjunction with the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships, presented by Storm, which open Thursday at Northrock Lanes.

They also were named 2007-08 Bowling Writers Association of America Collegiate Players of the Year at Wednesday’s event.

This marks the second straight MVP and Player of the Year award for Bandy, a Danville, Va., native who helped lead the Bears to the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Sectional title and their seventh consecutive championships appearance.

She joins Kelly Kulick (Morehead State), Karen Stroud (West Texas A&M) and Kari Murph (Morehead State) as the only players to win multiple NCBCA MVP awards. Kulick was honored three straight seasons (1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99).

Bandy, who was second in the nation with a 202.56 average this season, has been named a first-team All-American each of the last three seasons and earned Rookie of the Year honors and a second-team selection in her freshman season of 2004-05.

Rounding out the women’s first team is Wichita State junior Emily Maier, Sparks. Nev.; McKendree junior Rebekah Diers, Kingston, N.Y.; Martin Methodist junior Hayley Beavis, Southampton, England; and Pikeville freshman Ashly Galante, Palm Harbor, Fla.

“This feels amazing, but it’s not the only piece of hardware I want this weekend,” said Bandy, a former two-time Junior Team USA member who also will be competing at the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships for a third time this May. “This won’t feel like I want it to feel until we raise the Helmer Cup on Saturday. We have a great group of girls talent-wise and we are very cohesive.”

Galante, a Team USA member in 2007, also was honored as Women’s Rookie of the Year, marking the third time in the last four years the award was given to a Pikeville player. Jaime Foster won the honor last season.

Leading the nation with a 213.85 average, MacLelland helped lead the top-ranked Cardinals to consecutive national titles the past two seasons and the Chattanooga Sectional title in March. The Windsor, Ontario, native was named MVP of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships a year ago.

“All of this goes out to my dad,” said MacLelland, whose father is battling cancer. “He taught me everything I know. None of this would be possible without him. Now it’s time to go get No. 3. We’ve had that on our mind since the beginning of the year.”

MacLelland is joined on the men’s first team by Wichita State junior George Lambert, Hamilton, Ontario; Indiana senior Nick Hoagland, Canton, Ohio; William Paterson sophomore Matt O’Grady, South Amboy, N.J.; and Pikeville sophomore Kyle Barnes, Smryna, Tenn.

Chris Bardol of Robert Morris College (Ill.) was honored as Men’s Rookie of the Year.

William Paterson’s Dave Nagelhout and Purdue’s Scott Savage were tabbed as Kerm Helmer Coaches of the Year in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

The tournament which promises to have many participants from Asia and overseas, runs from May 7-13, 2008.

“I am looking forward to conducting the seminars, especially since this will be the first time that a USBC Silver Level Coaching Accreditation Seminar will be given outside of the United States,” said Nepomuceno.

Nepomuceno was one of the 21 international coaches, who received their USBC Silver Coach certification during an exclusive International Coach/Instructor Training seminar hosted by the United States Bowling Congress in February 2008.

“I was privileged to be trained by USBC Gold Coach and Bowlersmap and Digitrax Digital Coaching Software Designer, Rod Ross (pictured left), one on one after I received my silver coach certification last February to be able teach and certify the silver level class seminars,” Nepomuceno explained. “I hope to be able to do as great a seminar this first time out just as his was for me.”

Level 1 will be held on May 2, Bronze Level on May 3 and 4, and Silver Level on May 5, 6, and 7.

Since Nepomuceno has joined forces with USBC as certified coach and USBC Ambassador one year ago, he has conducted 8 seminars and certified a total of 79 coaches.

“The Silver Level is an advanced level of certification designed for individuals pursuing coaching and instruction as profession,” Nepomuceno said. “Only Bronze Level coaches who have coached for at least one year are eligible for the course May 5-7.”

This course will cover:

Keys to analyzing the physical game

Equipment, lane and lane play

Strong emphasis on “Cause and Effect” video analysis with an on-lane-session on Day 3.

Nepomuceno is also planning to have a Silver seminar in Hong Kong and in Singapore in a few months. We will inform you as soon as he has confirmed dates and venues. In addition there will be a Level 1 and Bronze seminar in Indonesia in July.

We currently are testing a new camera that can record 300 frames per second, in fact can go up to 1200 frames per second.

Our program BowlersMAP Gold can take a normal DV video camera and create 60 frames per second for motion analysis, so having 300 frames per second for analysis has us excited.

This is our first test using the camera, and we used it hand held with no additional lighting. The flicker you see with the strike ball is the florescent light pulsing. The bowler release is an lady with 165 average that was taking a lesson at our facility on the day I was testing the camera. In fact, the strike was the first and only shot I recorded on the pins, and she nailed it on the first try on a PBA pattern!

Select Quicktime for a High Quality version, however the file is large (28 MB) and will take some time to download. With the Quicktime version you can control the video frame forward and back or slow play forward / back by using the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard.

OMAHA, Neb. – Four teams remained alive Friday at the 2008 NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship at Thunder Alley: a defending champion with resolve, a runner-up proving it wasn’t a one-year wonder, a Division III powerhouse taking the next step and an upstart newcomer that continues to impress.

Defending champion Vanderbilt, which suffered a quick 4-0 defeat to Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first round of the best-of-7 Baker games, double-elimination match play, fought back to the semifinals where it beat the same undefeated Hawks, 4-2, to force another semifinal match between the teams Saturday.

“We never say die,” said Vanderbilt sophomore Josie Earnest, Most Outstanding Player of last year’s championship. “We know we are better when our backs are against the wall. We’re fighters. We’re trying to repeat.”

The Commodores, who defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 4-3, in last year’s title match, stayed alive after the first round by eliminating Sacred Heart, 4-3, and Central Missouri, 4-2.

“We know losing the first one doesn’t necessarily mean you’re done,” Vanderbilt head coach John Williamson said. “They didn’t want to lose. To advance in any tournament, you have to capitalize on mistakes and take advantage of opportunities. Other than the first match today, we were able to do that.”

In the other semifinal, Arkansas State – making its first appearance at the NCAA tournament – stayed alive with a 4-2 victory over New Jersey City. Arkansas State jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Knights posted big scores to win the next two, 244-185 and 214-166, and tighten the match.

The Indians, however, edged out a 207-199 victory in Game 6 to force Saturday’s rematch.

“We came very close to tying it up and on to Game 7,” said New Jersey City head coach Frank Parisi, who has his Division III Gothic Knights in the final four for the third time in the event’s five-year history. “If we can get some better breaks and start a little bit early with those kind of games we’ll obviously be in better shape. It bodes well and gives them the confidence that they aren’t going to quit.”

Since Maryland-Eastern Shore and New Jersey City each suffered their first loss in the semifinals, rematches are needed under the double-elimination format. Saturday’s semifinals begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT and are webcast on ncaa.com.

The best-of-7 Baker championship match is scheduled for 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, which will be aired live on ESPNU for the second straight year. The championship match also will be replayed at 7 p.m. EDT Monday on ESPN2.

Maryland-Eastern Shore, seeded seventh after qualifying, also defeated Arkansas State, 4.5-3.5 – rebounding from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits.

“This is the team we have seen all year, hopefully they will continue bowling like this,” said Maryland-Eastern Shore head coach Sharon Brummell, whose team is ranked second among NCAA schools. “I told them we got our bad day out of the way and seeding wasn’t important for our ultimate goal.”

New Jersey City cruised past Minnesota State, 4-1, in the first round, then rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down Central Missouri, 4.5-2.5, and advance to the semifinals.

Top-ranked Nebraska, which earned the No. 1 seed in qualifying and had won seven of eight tournaments this season, stunningly bowed out early – suffering a 4-1 defeat to Central Missouri, followed by a 4-0 sweep at the hands of Minnesota State.

“The worst portion of it that we let down is the fan base,” Nebraska head coach Bill Straub said. “We haven’t had an opportunity in a long time to have this much support and this much anticipation from the university.”
